Spanish is one of the most important languages in the world. This language is spoken by millions of people, many of them living in countries where the economies are growing at spectacular rates. This is nothing new for Spanish. Spanish was the language of one of the largest and most powerful empires the world has ever seen and, as such, it was spread all over the globe. It continues to spread today, becoming ever more influential in very powerful nations such as the US. This language is also among the most eclectic, borrowing heavily form other languages.

Worldwide, there are 417 million people who speak Spanish. It is among the world's most popular second languages and, in many places around the globe, speaking Spanish will make sure that you're understood. It's an important business language, as many developing economies are Spanish-speaking nations and are becoming very vibrant markets. This language is compatible with the Internet with no special characters needed. Though there is an ASCII set for Spanish letters, it can most often be easily read, even without tildes and other accents that are seen in the most formal of Spanish writing.

Spanish is also very much a living language. The Spanish spoken in Colombia, for instance, differs from that spoken in Mexico in several regards. Spanish is notable for being almost as rich as is English in slang and fashionable terms. It is also an important language for the arts and entertainment, as Latin America has one of the largest and most lucrative entertainment industries in the world. Even Hollywood has moved heavily into Spanish language movies, and American audiences are, more often than not, entirely accommodating to releases which are in Spanish with subtitles, and oftentimes even understand a bit of the language without those subtitles.

Spanish is likely to continue to grow in the 21st Century in terms of both commerce and culture. The language is increasingly being adopted by English speakers from the US as their second language as, essentially, doing so opens up the entirety of the Americas to them. There is also a wealth of literature and film written in Spanish, which has become increasingly interesting to audiences that speak other languages. This language is used in the scientific world, and nations that speak this language as their official one have contributed a great deal to technological, medical and scientific advancement and literature.
