Italian is spoken by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. It is the spoken language that remains the closest to the Latin from which it was largely derived. It is particularly beloved in the US, where many popular film and literary characters have Italian roots.

Despite the fact that most people know a few Italian words-"Ciao" being particularly popular-it is not an easy language to speak. There are very rigorous rules of pronunciation and grammar that need to be followed to be understood. The various dialects around Italy were somewhat influenced by the cultures with whom they came into contact. Though the contact was not friendly, the Germanic tribes left an influence on the dialects of Northern Italy, though they are not so present that a German speaker could necessarily recognize them today.

Italian, in one form or another, has been an important trade language for literally over 1,000 years. This language is also becoming more widely-used on the web, and the nation itself is very open to foreign business. There are even letters which have been added to the Italian alphabet, such as "J", principally because they're found in other languages from nations with whom Italy has had much contact. This combination of a web-friendly language and a relatively affluent and educated population makes it an ideal language for businesses seeking new markets. It is also a necessity for any business dealing in the arts.
